next, we go back to newtown. within days, neighbors and friends began telphoning one another, and then gathering to make sense of the violence. hari sreenivasan reports on the beginnings of a group called "newtown united." >> in a meeting at the newtown lie rather more than three dozen citizens gathered last night not just to grieve but to figure out what's next for their community. afterwards we sat down with few of them for an extended conversation. tom bitman is a technology consultant. and this woman a mother of four. scott wolman owns a speakers bureau and james runs an environmental nonprofit. so james let me start with you. what was the impetus for this conversation tonight? >> i think a lot of us were feeling the same thing that we were impacted by this event not as much as some people. but that we felt helpless. we needed an avenue to discuss how we felt about what was going on. >> 20 households lost first graders. 20. those families are shattered. they can't do anything. i feel a bit of a responsibility

the people of newtown, connecticut endured a fourth day of funerals for the mass shooting victims at sandy hook elementary school. police escorted processions of mourners as five more children and a teacher were laid to rest. services are also scheduled tomorrow and into the weekend. meanwhile in washington, vice president joe biden met with cabinet and law enforcement officials to discuss ways of reducing gun violence. later, attorney general eric holder headed to newtown to meet with those investigating the shootings. the first major winter storm of the season moved across the midwest today and began taking a toll on holiday travelers. blizzard warnings stretched from kansas to wisconsin as the weather system pushed eastward. it has already dumped a foot of snow in some areas, driven by powerful winds. in turn, some of the nation's busiest airports are reporting hundreds of flight delays and cancellations. the countdown to the end of the world was on today, at least in some places. it's based on a reading of the mayan calendar that says a final cataclysm will strike, tomorrow. we h

two along the canal and two near the newtown creek. the agency tested the newtown creek sites 13 days after the storm. the e.p.a. detected high levels of bacteria and some gasoline and diesel fuel. the agency declined requests for an interview but in a press release reported that other chemicals that were tested were below levels of concern or not detected. thomas burke of johns hopkins used to be the state of new jersey's chief environmental scientist. he says it appears the risk from sandy's flood waters are low but it's impossible to know the long-term risks of what may have been in the water without more extensive testing. >> does every single house have to be sampled? can we characterize what was in flood waters without doing that? probably. but we do need more samples. i think if i lived there, i'd want to know. >> reporter: burke says it's difficult for the e.p.a. to do a lot testing in the wake of disaster like sandy but he says testing is the only way to ameliorate the fears of flood zone residents like jacqueline lomb barred.
